- An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS for individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) but need an ID for tax purposes. It is used exclusively for tax filing and does not grant work rights or affect immigration status.
- Eligibility: If you or a dependent (including your spouse) need to file taxes but aren’t eligible for an SSN, you can apply for an ITIN using Form W-7. The application must be submitted along with your federal tax return.
-An individual can apply for an ITIN and an application (Form W7) for the same shall be attached to the Federal Tax Return only. For more information, please visit https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-w-7
Generally, you must keep records supporting your tax return for at least 3 years from the date you file. This includes records for income, deductions, and credits. If you filed a fraudulent return or under-reported income, the IRS may require records for longer.
Key Points:
Ensure that you keep proper documentation to support all income and deductions. Failure to do so may result in IRS penalties or tax adjustments.
